The British Promotional Merchandise Association (bpma) will be running the first ever National Promotional Products Week between 16th-20th September 2013.
The aim of the week is to raise the profile and effectiveness of promotional products to the end-user, with one clear voice supported by the leading industry trade association.

Members will be provided with a designated logo and promotional pack, and will participate in a number of events during the week to engage with their clients and prospects, whilst the bpma will be running a series of adverts and features in various media titles to promote this exciting occasion.
This is the first time the industry has had such a focussed event and bpma chairman Viv Blumfield stated, "Our intention is to create a very powerful message to as wide an audience as possible during this week. The timing of the event in mid September is aimed at capturing the pre-Christmas season and planning ahead for the New Year' The bpma will be launching the event officially to the end-user community during the month of June, which coincides with the Marketing Week Live event at Olympia and the Institute of Promotional Marketing Awards night on the 18th June. It has been one of the bpma's top priorities to demonstrate to buyers the benefits and value of using merchandise in marketing campaigns. Some of the bpma's latest research will also form part of the packs to members".

Kofax Increases Effectiveness of Lead Generation Campaign
with Clever Use of Promotional Merchandise

The Challenge
When Kofax wanted to improve their brand recognition within senior decision makers of their top 500 strategic accounts, and improve pipeline for their UK salesforce, it was obvious they needed a campaign that grabbed attention and delivered their message in a unique, memorable and effective way.
Kofax offers state of the art document capture, management and business process solutions for some of the largest organisations on the planet. However, many customers are only using a tiny percentage of the potential of the software. Stephan Bleeckx, Senior Field Marketing Manager, EMEA explains: “Historically we have sold small solutions at a departmental level, often with the help of a partner or re-seller. Over the years our solution offering has become much more advanced and many of our customers are unaware of the true potential of their investment or the other options that are now available to them. We need to get that message across to some of the most senior people in some of the largest organisations in Europe.”
With that kind of challenge facing them, Kofax came to award winning supplier of promotional products, Outstanding Branding for inspiration.
The Solution
The marketing department had come up with a very professional outbound communication campaign that revolved around a dedicated microsite with tailored video based content for specific customers. In order to get visitors to the website to download the content they had planned the usual email campaign and also an ‘impact mailer’ sent through the traditional ‘snail mail’.
After discussing the campaign, its objectives and the required results with the Kofax marketing team, Outstanding Branding made a number of recommendations. One of which was to include some branded earphones in the impact mailer to enable their prospects to easily listen to the video content on the microsite. Kofax agreed with this recommendation and included it within their multi-touch campaign.
The Results
The campaign generated a qualified pipeline totaling over $1,000,000 and actual sales of over $250,000. But these numbers only tell half of the story. When Kofax analysed the traffic drivers to their microsite they found that the impact mailer, with our headphones, was eight times more effective than the email campaign. Also during the telephone follow up that was conducted in the days after the impact mailer landed on desks, 65% of the people who were spoken to remembered the mailer, and more importantly, remembered who the mailer was from. The callers all agreed that being able to say ‘We sent you the earphones in the post’ was a great ice breaker and conversation starter.
Bleeckx commented, “This campaign is one of the most successful we have ever deployed and we will be looking at rolling it out on a global basis. There is no doubt that the direct mail piece, incorporating the earphones from Outstanding Branding, had a significant positive impact on the overall effectiveness of the campaign.”

The Gospel According to James Caan

Serial Entrepreneur, James Caan, shared his extensive experience of building businesses and making the most of opportunities at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster last night.
'James Caan: Thirty Years of Business Insight' was arranged by The Evening Standard Business Connections, and was held in the beautiful auditorium at the trans-denominational Emmanuel Church. It was a chance for business people and entrepreneurs to hear Caan speak at some length about his history, achievements, and positive vision for the future. Following his inspirational talk, the floor was opened up for a Q&A session, to allow attendees to ask questions of one of the BBC’s popular Dragons’ Den businessmen.
“The opportunity to hear one of the UK’s most successful business people talk, and give the audience insights into how he has successfully grown more businesses than most people have had jobs, was one not to be missed,” said Sarah Penn, Managing Director of Outstanding Branding, who attended the event.
“I was particularly inspired by his positivity, even in face of the current economic climate, and also his commitment to mentoring the next generation of business people. SMEs are well known to be the biggest employers in the UK; James Caan sees growing small businesses as the way to take the country out of recession, and with the growth we’re currently experiencing at Outstanding Branding, we aim to be taking more people off the government’s unemployment figures ourselves!”.
As well as supporting the Goverment’s StartUp Loan initiative, which offers loans to school leaving entrepreneurs, Caan is a passionate believer in taking the positives from every situation and not talking down the economy. This is an attitude mirrored by Outstanding Branding, who are continuing to grow despite the reports of doom and gloom.
“We take every opportunity to learn from the best in all aspects of business, as it’s critical to us that we continue to grow and develop – the Q&A session was great too as it showed how many other businesses in London are thinking in the same way as Outstanding Branding” commented Sarah Penn.

London-based supplier of promotional merchandise, Outstanding Branding, recently sponsored the Outstanding Achievement Award at Coventry University London Campus. The award is to recognise the student who achieved the overall highest mark in the International Marketing MBA course.
Sarah said “Outstanding Branding has worked closely with the Coventry University London Campus for several years now, producing a range of promotional merchandise for them. They obviously consider us to be Outstanding by nature, as well as by name, as we were approached and asked to sponsor their award for the Outstanding Marketing Student of the Year. This award goes to the student with the highest overall marks in their International Marketing MBA. We were of course more than happy to be associated with this prestigious award; and as well as being at the awards ceremony itself to present the commemorative trophy to the winner, we offered the winner, Miriam Schmidt, a week’s work experience here at Outstanding Branding.”
The awards ceremony was held at the Honorable Artillery Company’s stunning Georgian premises in Old Street, London on Friday 19th November; and Sarah was invited to address the students about the close relationship between Outstanding Branding and Coventry University London Campus; and the need to strive to be outstanding in every aspect of one’s life.
“It was highly gratifying to have the opportunity to speak to today’s graduates, giving them an insight into the world of work and promotional merchandise. I enjoyed being able to talk about our aims here at Outstanding Branding, namely to always be the best at what we do; and I hope that they take some of the messages forward into their working lives,” said Sarah. “The University’s aims are to provide students with the knowledge, skills and experience to join the work force as valuable assets to their employers; as well as to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit we need in these tough economic times. To be part of those students’ graduation day was very special”.

Honoured at COGS Awards

Outstanding Branding recently received the distinction of being awarded 1st Runner Up in the Promotional Merchandise category of the prestigious COGS Marketing Services Awards 2012.
This was the third year the awards ceremony, has been held, and took place at Vinopolis near London Bridge. The COGS Awards were launched by The Institute for Promotional Marketing in 2010 to recognise and celebrate the achievement of companies committed to the delivery of fantastic marketing services. More than 1500 marketers voted in the first round to produce a short list in 17 different categories, including Promotional Merchandise.
Having received sufficient votes to be shortlisted as one of 5 companies in this category, Outstanding Branding were asked, along with the other nominees, to provide evidence of their success in three criteria: creativity and strategic thinking; innovation in client services; and success against all odds. These submissions were then voted on by a panel of industry experts who were looking for evidence of outstanding achievement in each area.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for us to enter these awards,” says Managing Director of Outstanding Branding, Sarah Penn, “as they recognise all the areas we deliver to our clients as standard. Creativity in product and service delivery is something all our clients require; innovation is key for us both in the services we offer to our clients and how we operate internally; and succeeding against all odds is an integral part of our ethos”.
“To be even nominated in this very competitive field was an honour; to receive an award was amazing, particularly knowing that it’s our clients who have nominated us in the first place. I’m I’m hugely proud of all our team who have enabled us to succeed and receive the recognition of our peers within the industry.”

Born Silently Charity

Sarah Penn, Managing Director of Outstanding Branding, has announced today that BornSilently has been selected as the company’s chosen charity for the rest of the year.
BornSilently was founded recently by Bethany Morris, a client of the company, after the harrowing loss of her identical twin daughters, Harriet and Felicity, who were born prematurely on July 2nd this year at just 21 weeks.
Bethany and her husband, Steve, are determined to turn their grief and pain into something positive in memory of their daughters and have set themselves a cycle challenge – they will be setting off from their home in Crowborough and cycling the 326 miles to their daughters’ birthplace in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. During this ride, they will be raising money to support two charities: Tommy's, who research miscarriage still birth and prematurity, and TAMBA (Twins and Multiple Birth Association), who support families with multiple pregnancies. Whilst raising money for the two charities, Bethany and Steve will also raise awareness for the campaign to save the Maternity & Paediatric Units at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton from closure.
Bethany tells us her story:
“On Saturday 30th June at about 3pm my waters broke and the most terrifying three days of our lives were about to begin. When we arrived at The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton we both knew in our hearts that nothing could be done – although we were both still hoping for a miracle.
We received the most amazing care and support from the incredible staff at this hospital, but tragically on Monday 2nd July 2012 at 10.40pm, after six hours in labour, our baby girls were born together and never took a breath. We were able to hold them, name them and spend time with them. They were perfect in every way but just so incredibly small. The following morning when the girls were brought back to our room, the sun came out on a cloudy day and we said goodbye to our little rays of sunshine.
Our chosen charities, Tommy's and Tamba support others in this situation and undertake research to prevent this happening so often.”
Sarah and Outstanding Branding have offered to provide support to Bethany and Born Silently for the rest of the year – including a full set of Craft cycling clothing for Bethany, Steve and their 5 fellow cyclists and supporters on their journey. As well as bearing Outstanding Branding’s logo, these performance cycling kits will show the logos of the charities, details of the cycle challenge, and of course how to donate.
Sarah says “My own daughter was also born prematurely, 6 weeks early, in March this year, and I count my blessings that she has been fortunately able to thrive. 50,000 babies are born prematurely in the UK every year, so I’m thrilled that Outstanding Branding are able to help raise money for vital research into premature birth.”
The Born Silently Cycle Challenge with depart from The Huntsman in Eridge, East Sussex at 11am on 11th November, Harriet and Felicity’s original due date. The team will ride through London, Cambridge, Peterborough, Lincoln, Scunthorpe and York and along the east of England, ending up in Northallerton on 17th November.
Anyone wishing to donate and support Bethany and Steve can visit BornSilently Cycle Challenge’s Just Giving page - www.justgiving.com/teams/bornsilently.

Ask the Expert

After the recent success of Marketing Week Live at London Olympia, Outstanding Brandings Sales Director, Andy Thorne was asked to be there monthly "Ask the Expert", answering questions on the Promotional Merchandise Industry. Here are his answers.
What are the latest trends in the promotional marketing industry?
The current trends for the industry are very much linked to retail, so we are now able to supply appliqué clothing which has always been popular for the college sweatshirt look but has always been a retail product as the technique on smaller runs has always been cost prohibitive. There is new machinery that uses lasers to cut the fabrics and this has opened up a whole new offering. The other area which is very popular right now is packaging for products, once upon a time we just supplied a printed, pen, mug or key ring, However now we are able to produce full colour printed packaging for those items in smaller quantity’s which transforms the items into a retail look and feel. This in turn gives a higher perceived value when given to someone.
Is there a brand out there that you think is using promotional merchandise particularly well?
Funnily enough I commented recently after watching the Pringles ad on TV that the speakers that they are giving away are a great use of promo merchandise. The speakers are in the shape of the iconic Pringles tube and can be used with Mp3 players and phones which the kids will love. Mangers also use merchandise very well as part of promotions and in the pubs/bars.
What’s the quirkiest promotional item on the market at the moment?
I think the Nike Grind range of promotional products are a real innovation, Nike take old trainers, recycle them and the material that is produced is called Nike Grind which can then be turned into plastic promotional items. As well as a cool story, you get to dual brand the items with the Nike Grind logo. Other items which are currently showing innovation are the Clic2C paper products which take a static pad, sticky note or desk block and turn them interactive using a full colour image that has an embedded QR code and links directly to a website. Anyone who visited the Outstanding Branding stand at Marketing Week Live would have also seen the advancement in technology for caps, we can now brand the whole cap using a variety of new techniques and fabrics which bring the headwear to life. Full colour and individually branded conference folders are making waves as everyone loves to have there only personalised folder and if you have a full colour logo, in the past embossing was your only option but now its possible to brand the folders full colour using UV technology.
What’s the most popular promotional item you sell and why?
Pens and USB sticks are the staple diet of a promotional merchandise distributor, I have been in the industry for 12 years and promotional pens have remained the number 1 selling item, there has been many developments with lights added, or pull out flags or touch screen stylus ends, antibacterial pens, the list is endless but as creative as we get there is always room for a pen, because it doesn’t matter how techie the world gets, we all still write.
USB memory sticks are a close second, we now live in a world of large files, data, video, Artwork and people cant always email those large files so branded USBs have continued to be given away, just like the pens they have evolved to have auto open URLS or dashboards to manage content, there are now bespoke shapes being produced which brings a logo or brand alive but ultimately USBs are so useful in this day and age to carry information.
Which clients do you currently work with?
We have a wide range of clients from charitable organisations such as the WWF (World wildlife fund) to oil companies such as Shell, Tech company’s such as Yahoo to the city institutions like HSBC. Branded promotional merchandise is used by everyone so there isn’t one particular market we sell into. This keeps life very interesting as we have to continue to be creative with the briefs that we brainstorm.
What's the most exciting campaign you've worked on and why?
For me it has to be for team RAC, they were part of the British touring car championships and were one of the bigger sponsors, so spent a lot of money of promoting the team. Each week I would see pictures online of swathes of bright orange caps and foam hand spanners from the circuits they raced at. We also got to produce models of the 2 touring cars which hadn’t been done in many years with them fetching well over £100 online. In our industry you don’t always get to see the products being used so its great to have been involved in something so high profile. The other is for Sony who ran a “Love It” promotion which involved a settee being taken around the country to shopping centres with people being asked what there favourite films were. We produced 5 giant bespoke thumb shaped cushions to go onto the settees; again this was featured on TV and online via a facebook page.
What added value does promotional merchandise bring to a marketing campaign?
Promotional Merchandise is the gift that keeps giving and this is particularly true for marketing campaigns, As giveaways are a physical item they are either used, commented on or given to someone else which keeps a campaign going long after the event. Once upon a time Promo items were thought of as the poor relation to the marketing mix where as now marketers can see the ROI is as good, if not better that some traditional disciplines. In a recent BPMA (British Promotional Merchandise Association) survey 87% of recipients said they kept a promotional gift longer than 12 months.

Education is Key

Two members of staff at London based distributor of promotional merchandise, Outstanding Branding, recently passed the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) diploma.
Production Administrator, Tracey Kiernan and Sales Manager Ed Atkins both embarked on the 5 month course wanting to learn new aspect of the industry and to formalise their existing knowledge. Both employees passed the course with a distinction and they will be rewarded with a graduation ceremony at the House of Commons.
"It’s brilliant that our already knowledgeable staff are working towards a greater level of understanding of the promotional product industry." said Andy Thorne, Sales Director at Outstanding Branding.
"The BPMA diploma is key to the growth and success of our company because it enables us to offer our clients a greater level of service, knowledge and professionalism”
The BPMA diploma is a mixture of online, classroom and hands on practical learning; each candidate spends time at a production facility getting a first hand practical look at the branding processes that go into producing promotional items.
"When we are offering advice to our clients, we need to be at the top of our game as they expect an outstanding , knowledgeable service. The BPMA diploma gives our employees the opportunity to see the branding processes such as engraving, screen print and embroidery first hand " commented Andy Thorne.
The BPMA are the UK trade association for the promotional product industry and consider education and training a key asset to offer. They feel by increasing knowledge and understanding, promotional merchandise will be considered amongst the marketing mix by marketing professionals.
Commenting on the achievement by Tracey Kiernan and Ed Atkins, Director General of the BPMA Gordon Glenister said “I am delighted that our chartered distributor, Outstanding Branding, has two members of their team pass with distinction. They should all be very proud of the achievement and continual investment in education.”

New Sales Manager Promoted

The good times continue to roll at London based distributor Outstanding Branding where they recently promoted Senior Account Manager, Ed Atkins, to Sales Manager.
Ed Atkins has a wealth of industry experience on both the Supplier and Distributor sides of the industry and joined Outstand Branding last April. Ed has gone from strength to strength, continually achieving targets and looking to help the newer members of the company.
"I have known Ed for a long time and understand what he is capable of. I had the pleasure of managing him at a previous distributor and jumped at the chance to get him onboard at Outstanding Branding" said Andy Thorne, Sales Director at Outstanding Branding.
"Ed has come in and immediately produced the figures we know he was capable of; with that in mind we wanted to develop his skills and enrolled him onto the BPMA Academy with a view to developing his Sales Management once successfully completed”
The sales team that Ed will now lead has a great deal of industry experience and success, although there is still a vacancy for another experienced account manager.
"We are always looking for successful sales people and account managers; we want to develop people and enhance their careers. Ed was recently approached by a couple of industry head hunters and turned down both because he knows that at Outstanding Branding he will have a career path which includes continued development and reward", commented Andy Thorne.
The decision for Ed to join Outstanding Branding was quite straight forward once he knew they were interested and that they would look to develop him into a Sales Manager.
Commenting on why he joined Outstanding Branding, Ed said “Having worked with both Andy Thorne and Sarah Penn in the past I knew their passion, dedication and drive to succeed could only complement my own personal goals. Even whilst working abroad, the name Outstanding Branding was (and still is) making waves and to be part of this amazing new company was not a tough choice. Andy knew I was thinking of coming back to the UK, and having known each other for a long time, he made it very clear to me how much he wanted me to work at Outstanding Branding. This desire, and obviously the cool location, quality of clients and amazing atmosphere, made it impossible to say no”
And describing the feeling of being promoted Ed said “Ecstatic! It is quite simply the fulfilment of my ambitions. It’s already been a steep learning curve, but I’m enjoying every second of it. There are plenty of new challenges and a whole new way of viewing day-to-day situations but being in charge of my own team and taking an active part in planning and strategy is really exciting. So far my team seem to be sharing in my enthusiasm!”
